I think my entrepreneurial spirit became evident when I was in the second grade. That was the year I had my first lemonade stand and was also the year that I decided carnations made out of Kleenex would be a big seller. The lemonade stand brought in minimal profit, but the carnations were a hit with the elementary school crowd! That "create and sell" mentality is still alive and kicking and has led me to where I am today.
Yippee!!...was I ever excited when the Internet came along! Now I could make and sell stuff to the whole wide world! Being the closet computer geek that I am, the Internet was right up my alley! I started my first online store (boutique sounds better, but back then it was just a store) in 2002. I bought a basic website template and Front Page and was on my way. I thought... The main problem was that I didn't know html. Front Page was a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) program, but let's face it...you still need to know some html. My first site was just never what I really wanted it to be. Then I started noticing all of these really hip and cool "boutiques". "Hey...that's what I want", I cried out. After a little research, I discovered that wonderful little thing called a content mangement system (CMS). Yeah!!! I signed on with a great host with a great CMS and the rest is history.
OK...well, I left a little bit of the story out. Even though the CMS was neater than sliced bread, it was way more work than I expected. I think the help desk at my hosting company is probably on Valium now because of me. You see, I'm a very detailed person and I need everything to be perfect. Symmetry is my best friend!
After setting up my third online boutique, I had become quite proficient and considered myself somewhat of a SME (subject matter expert). (I love acronyms!) This is when the entrepreneurial side of me decided that not everyone is a geek like me! They might not want to spend the time that I did, researching and just having to figure things out. They might not like spending hours trying to getting everything lined up perfectly or adding a hundred versions of the same exact item. But I do!
And so the story goes...My name is Kathleen Brown and I live in Fort Worth Texas. Aren't you sorry you wanted to know more about me? |
